Type "dilettante" into Google search and the following definition appears at the top of the page:
No doubt professional etymologists would want to access the complete OED to get the full definition and derivation of the word "dilettante". But, in keeping with this blog, we'll stick with this simple definition, and not even bother to click on More.
If you clicked on More then you want to try harder,... er... rather... try less harder. In finding the answer to the question "What is a dilettante?" in the spirit of wanting to be a dilettante, you must learn to have no real commitment and not seek anything but the most rudimentary knowledge.
So what a dilettante is, perhaps you need a definition of "idler". If so find one yourself, because the definition didn't pop up immediately in a Google search, and I'm too idle to always be digging up definitions of common words.
In any case, put these two words together and we have the "dilettante idler", someone who cultivates fun stuff without becoming obsessive about such stuff, so that the fun isn't destroyed by the obsession.
In the posts that follow I'll be recording my attempts at dilettante idling... if blogging continues to be something I find fun, but not too onerous.
